As popular as Karlo’s rosé (previously reviewed here), I would wager their biggest seller is probably this Riesling, and for good reason. As you will hear when you taste this wine at the winery, this wine is emblematic of Richard Karlo and his reputation for bringing balance and creativity into his wine. With a bit more upfront sugar than some other Rieslings, this wine still has the balanced acidity that makes this Riesling an awesome pairing with richer, creamier foods. What makes this unique, though, is this fact:
We use 6 year old [spent] barrels which naturally soften the bracing acidity and add an extra layer of complexity.
Indeed, there is a very soft, silky ending to the wine which brings to mind the characteristics of a barrel fermented chardonnay. Quite the treat in a Riesling which is a style that often drinks more uni-dimensionally (sweet or acidic).
That first taste is gorgeous pears and linden … and with that extra bit of sugar up front, it reminds me of the floralness of a good Loupiac. The middle has a full, round, and very satin feeling before the balanced acidity, some courageous minerality that pays homage to the terroir, and some delicious green apples finish the experience.
Having tasted and been struck by these flavours at the winery, I returned home to create what I thought would be the perfect pairing: a Fennel and Green Apple Slaw with a creamy Greek yogurt dressing. If that doesn’t convince you summer has arrived, nothing will.
